Spring Garden Update

Well, the clocks have gone forwards and it is now light when I get home from work! This means I can do little bits in the garden rather than waiting for a Saturday and doing everything all in one day.

Much has happened since the last update.

1. The dogwood has bloomed. This is an indication that the last frost is passed. The groundhog said Spring would be early!

2. We found some carpet on the side of a road. Perfect for putting on walkways in the garden to stop weeds.
I used it to good effect.

3. Net by net I managed to get all the trellis nets in place. It took a while, but hopefully this is a once only thing. I will be storing the metal structures in the winter...

4. The plants are doing quite well. They have been under the protection of the plastic - but now they are exposed to the elements. I have placed a net over the garden to stop the birds or squirrels stealing my strawberries.

5. Both concrete boxes are now spray painted brown to look a little nicer than boring grey concrete.

As you can see - things are getting quite green in this box.

It dawned on me how cool this system is. I have 16 onions per square in three squares (48 in total). That would be 12ft of onions if I had used row gardening. I would have wasted 2ft between the rows to walk down beside them to water them. With square foot gardening I just water each square. All the plants are all there in one place! (i.e. not much walking about needed).

I will update for each plant in a moment.

Here is the full garden (click picture for bigger pic):

We now have a wind parrot to gauge the strength and direction of the wind. Notice the nice carpet runs? They are about 3ft wide as recommended my Mel B.

I planted Sweetcorn, Runner beans and coriander and bush beans.
Just tomatoes, melons, cucumbers and peppers to go!
